WTF is a Tech Pack
Honestly though, Tech Packs are a bit of a bugger aren’t they, I’ll admit it – they’re just so complicated & detailed that it’s like ‘well, where the F do I even start’
If I showed you my first ever Tech Pack you will literally LOL
But over the past 10(ish) years , I have become fascinated with the Tech Pack, how can a document consisting of 6-12 pages (on average) be understood WORLDWIDE from a series of drawings, numbers & arrows. Sorry but that is amazing right?
So what is it & what does it do? Here is a development flow I made earlier:
As you can see, the development of your garments rely on your Tech Packs.
A Tech Pack is an instruction manual for your seamstress, manufacturer or factory to study before any preparation is made for your designs. It tells everyone involved in making your garments:
♡ What fabric you are using
♡ What trims you need & how many (e.g. buttons)
♡ Placements of details (e.g. stitching, graphics)
♡ The size of your garment
♡ The stitching techniques
♡ Label information
& SO. MUCH. MORE
But what does it do?
If you are already chatting with manufacturers to find out how much things will cost or to enquire about their services, you will often get asked for your tech packs to start the process. This is because there are so many elements to a garment that costings need to be really well calculated. So if you’re trying to budget for your sample creation, you’ll need a tech pack for accurate costs and then following on with well made samples for checking & fitting.
But what does it do? FOR ME?
I get it, starting out isn’t cheap, getting bang for your buck in this industry is difficult (thank you fast fashion for keeping the industry in a loophole of low prices) Tech Packs are your receipt for your order. Working with a manufacturer overseas with a language barrier it is so crucial to have a document to refer back to check the samples when they arrive. Otherwise that’s money down the drain & back to square 1. Tech Packs also help you to look professional, manufacturers are BUSY, if you’re not contacting them correctly, expect a no reply!
